5 common causes of falling accidents

Falling can result in a variety of injuries, from a minor sprain to a debilitating brain injury. These accidents are disturbingly common, too. According to statistics from the National Floor Safety Institute, more than eight million ER visits every year are because of falls.

How exactly do so many of these accidents occur? Here are the most prevalent causes of slips, trips and falls.

1. Wet surfaces

Any type of surface may become wet and cause you to slip. Some common situations include:

  • A liquid spill
  • Freshly mopped or waxed floors
  • Rain, ice or snow
  • A worn and rounded step on a staircase

These hazardous conditions may be present anywhere, including retail stores, apartment complexes and schools.

2. Uneven or messy surfaces

Sometimes, walkways have obstructions or uneven characteristics, such as:

  • Cluttered floors
  • Potholes in parking lots
  • Torn carpets
  • Loose floorboards
  • Debris on stairs

These circumstances may result in you tripping and falling.

3. Landlord negligence

Walkways and surfaces may be hazardous due to landlords not resolving problems. If a dangerous condition exists on a property, the owner has an obligation to clean up the issue or at least provide adequate warning to the public. The legal responsibility of a landlord to provide a safe environment is known as premises liability.

4. Employer negligence

Slips, trips and falls may occur in the workplace. Employers have a similar responsibility as landlords. Your boss should properly train you to recognize and avoid any falling hazards. He or she should also be proactive in keeping the workplace free of any dangers. If you fall and get hurt at work, you may be eligible for workers' compensation.

5. Nursing home neglect

Elderly people who are in long-term care facilities often need assistance moving around. Some nursing home residents require assistance moving and balancing. If a nursing home does not have a railing or the staff does not help, this may cause residents to get hurt.
